What the Infrastructure Records Say

Chae-Gyeol finds the answer in the infrastructure files, under a category she almost skips: original building construction, 1967.

The clearstory window at relay 2 -- the narrow horizontal window near the ceiling that makes the light strange -- is original to the building. It was not added when the Lived resolution infrastructure was installed. It was not planned around the relay junction. It was there first.

The relay junction was installed in 2019, when the building joined the Lived network. The engineers placed it at the relay 2 position because of a thermal differential they detected there. The thermal differential exists because of the window. The window light hits the floor at a specific angle and creates a temperature gradient along that section of corridor. The gradient is consistent, predictable, and useful as a fidelity boundary anchor.

The relay is there because the light is there. The light was there first.

The Window Is 58 Years Old

She sits with the building blueprint for a long time.

The window was designed in 1967 by an architect whose name is in the file. It is a practical window -- a clearstory for ventilation and ambient light in an interior corridor. The architect did not know about Lived resolution. The architect did not know about fidelity boundaries. The architect made a window that let light into a corridor at a specific angle because the corridor needed light.

58 years later: three people stopped under that window in spring 2021 without knowing why. One was studying the site she was standing in. One was photographing what he could not capture. One was checking a route slip and kept looking up.

All three felt the light was strange.

What the Column Now Contains

She adds a new section to the pre-systematic column: Infrastructure origin.

Clearstory window: 1967. Original building construction. Thermal differential at relay 2: present since at least 1967. Relay junction installed: 2019. Location chosen because of pre-existing thermal differential. First documented observer pause: spring 2021.

The corridor has been doing this since before the Lived network existed. The relay is a recent addition to a phenomenon the building was already producing.

What the Finding Is

She writes the methodological note carefully.

The pre-systematic period does not begin in 2021. It begins in 1967, when the window was installed. Anyone who walked through this corridor in the decades between 1967 and 2021 may have felt the light and paused. There is no record of them. They did not leave a trace. The three observers in 2021 left traces only because two of them happened to be artists who kept notes and one happened to respond to a message 58 years after the window was built.

The pre-systematic column has an estimated total: unknown. The pre-systematic period has a start date: 1967. The study does not begin in 2022. The study begins when the window was installed. The corridor has been doing this for at least 58 years.
