The third entry was the one Reyna had gotten wrong.
She had written it three months ago, before the Holloway hearings started, when she was still working from the original documentation. A name she had been certain of. A name she had built the next two entries around. When the deposition came through last week she had read it twice before she understood what had happened: she had remembered a title as a name. Not a person — a role. The chronology still held. The structure still held. But the entry had a person where there should have been a function, and everything built on it carried that error forward.
She had corrected it in the document. The name was gone. In its place: office of the operations director (unnamed, 2031-2034). Four words where one had been. Technically more accurate. Harder to read.
She had expected the correction to feel like resolution. It did not. It felt like the log watching itself, which was a different thing.
The marginal notes were her addition — not standard procedure, not required by the Variance Log protocol. She had started making them in the third week when she noticed that her certainty about specific details was not tracking with her certainty about the overall arc. She could remember what happened. She could not always remember who. She could remember when. She could not always remember why she had been certain of a particular attribution at the time she made it.
The marginal notes said things like: confident at time of entry, source unclear in retrospect. Or: verified against contemporaneous account — but which account? Or, in three places she had gone back to reread: still confident. No reason to doubt. Note that this confidence is now the only surviving record.
That last category troubled her most. Confidence as the only surviving record meant she could not distinguish between what she had known and what she had concluded. The original observation and the story she had been telling herself about the observation had, somewhere in the intervening years, become the same thing.
She did not know if this was a finding or a confession. She wrote it in the margin anyway: in three instances, confidence is the only surviving record. No corrective action. Observation only.
The Variance Log was supposed to document drift. She had not known, when she started it, that the most significant drift would be in the person doing the documenting.
